| A massive earthquake struck southwestern China on May 12. The 8-magnitude earthquake was the most powerful to strike China since 1949, devastating a hilly region of small cities and towns in Sichuan and nearby provinces. Tremors were reported in most areas of the country, including Shanghai, and as far away as Thailand and Vietnam. The central government has launched a massive rescue effort that includes the People's Liberation Army, medical workers and ordinary people. |
